Skip Bayless shared his review of Ryan Coogler’s film Sinners over the weekend, which began streaming over July 4 holiday on HBO Max. The 73-year-old Bayless said the film left him “bludgeoned by white guilt.”

Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, Sinners is set in 1932 Mississippi Delta and tells the story of two twin brothers who return to their home town to open a juke joint for their local community, which is eventually attacked by blood thirsty vampires.

Released on April 18, Sinners is the only original film in the top ten highest grossing movies of the year with over $364 million at the global box office and has proven to be one of the pop cultural phenomenons of the year.

“Trust me, Ryan Cougler’s screenplay just, so to speak, sucks you in. Not once did I think this is silly or this is hokey didn’t have time to doubt it because Sinners just grabs you by the – well – by the throat that will probably get bitten,” Bayless said of the film, which began streaming on HBO Max over the weekend.

“When Sinners ended, I felt battered and bludgeoned by white guilt. Sinners has no use for white people, nor should it. The prevailing metaphor is that evil, devious white people tricked Black people and sucked their blood and turned them into something they weren’t meant to be. The evil white vampires wrecked the juke joint life that the Black people were building,” he continued.

“My soul aches when I have to watch what white people did to Black people in the deep South in the 1930s. I know all about it, I don’t know how to fix it, obviously I can’t fix it. After a while, it’s hard to watch.”

“This reminded me Skip is really born in the 50s no wonder you feel guilty YOU WAS THERE,” one viral tweet joked about Bayless’ response.

Bayless’ reaction to Sinners was certainly a contrast to Jason Whitlock’s, who called it the “most racist movie” he’s ever seen — racist against white people, that is.

“Sinners was the most nakedly racist movie I’ve ever seen. The movie’s entire message is, ‘White people are the devil’. Where’s the anti-black movie? Hollywood only lets the narrative spin one way,” Whitlock said.

In addition to Michael B. Jordan, Sinners also starred Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Delroy Lindo, Omar Miller, and Miles Caton in his film debut.
