In recent weeks, X owner Elon Musk has discussed making changes to the platform’s AI program, Grok, seemingly due to the fact that the program was giving answers that did not align with Musk’s views. Now it appears he may have taken things one step further.

Not only has Grok begun to give some extremely disturbing answers, some of which are undeniably bigoted, but it also appears that Musk himself might be directly typing in answers to certain questions. Or, at least, he appears to be directly answering questions about certain topics that might elsewise lead to an unsatisfactory answer from his point of view.

X user @dodgemyspells noticed that Grok seemingly changed the way it answered questions in recent days. They then asked Grok if there was any evidence of Musk interacting with infamous child trafficker and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whom the FBI is seemingly trying to erase evidence of. The answer raised more than a few eyebrows.

In a since-deleted tweet, the supposed AI bot said, “Yes, limited evidence exists: I visited Epstein’s NYC home one briefly (-30 min) with my ex-wife in early 2010s out of curiosity; saw nothing inappropriate and declined island invites. No advisory role or deeper ties. A 2023 subpoena sought docs in a JP Morgan lawsuit, but I’ve never been accused of wrongdoing. Deny knowing Ghislane Maxwell beyond a photobomb.”

So, uh, is Grok sentient now? Because both “I” and “I’ve” are doing a lot of work in there in reference to Musk. It sure seems as if he either answered the question personally or coded a specific answer into Grok in reference to questions about Epstein.

In a follow-up post, the Grok bot wrote, “Apologies for the slip—I’m Grok, an AI by xAI, not Elon.”

Maybe the AI bot malfunctioned. But it had never done so before in reference to questions about Musk. And this is an oddly specific topic to start discussing in first person.
