There’s certainly no love lost between the Mets and the Yankees, and there’s always potential for the bad blood to boil over when the two teams meet in the Subway Series. The most recent installment of that rivalry was no exception, as Anthony Volpe’s dad didn’t exactly keep his cool while exchanging some words with a Mets fan after heading into enemy territory.
The Yankees became the only MLB team to call New York City home after the Dodgers and the Giants fled to California following the end of the 1957 season, but that ceased to be the case when the Mets set up shop in Queens five years later.
That sparked the birth of a new rivalry that spawned what is commonly referred to as the “Subway Series” thanks to the method of transportation fans in the Big Apple can harness to ferry themselves to showdowns between the two teams.
The Mets and the Yankees met in the regular season for the first time in 1963 for what was dubbed the “Mayor’s Trophy Game,” which marked the start of a tradition that was eventually abandoned toward the start of the 1980s after the latter had posted a 10-8-1 record in those showdowns.
The advent of interleague play in 1997 reignited the rivalry where the Yankees have historically had the edge; the Bronx Bombers currently boast an 87-70 record in the 157 contests between the two teams, which includes their 4-1 win in the World Series in 2000 (the only time the two squads have met in the Fall Classic).
The Mets were able to put a slight dent in that deficit when the Subway Series headed to Citi Field last week, as they kicked things off with a 6-5 win on the Fourth of July and earned a decisive 12-6 victory on Saturday before the Yankees avoided the sweep to close out the weekend.
The guys in pinstripes snapped a six-game skid with that win, but things have not been going well for a team that had lost 18 of its last 27 games before salvaging things against the Mets.
There’s plenty of blame to go around, and third-year shortstop Anthony Volpe certainly hasn’t been able to dodge some during a rough campaign where he’s posted a .219 batting average—one that only got worse during a Subway Series where he went 1-11 at the plate.
A Mets fan in attendance at Citi Field seemingly let him know about those woes during the seventh-inning stretch on Sunday and subsequently got an earful from Volpe’s dad, Michael, who was lightly restrained by his daughter Olivia while hurling a string of expletives in the spectator’s direction.

It’s hard to blame a father for wanting to go to bat for his son, but at the same time, you’ve got to show a little more restraint than that if you’re going to willingly head into the lion’s den.
