United States Men’s National Team manager Mauricio Pochettino is under fire following the team’s 2-1 loss to Mexico in the finals of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. But not for the reasons that you’d think.

While fans were understandably upset about the USMNT’s loss to Mexico in the final, especially given a rough last few years, many understood that the U.S. was largely outgunned without many of its biggest stars. But it’s what Pochettino said afterward that has him under pressure.

“Football without fans is impossible,” he said while speaking with members of the Latin American media. Pochettino went on to state that he hoped that in the future, the USMNT would play in front of a more partisan home crowd full of American fans.

The last part of that comment is what seems to have drawn ire from all sides of the spectrum.

First, former USMNT striker Herculez Gomez called out Pochettino for insinuating that Mexican-American fans were not American.

“Those fans were American, they’re just not #USMNT fans—big difference,” he posted on X. “You can’t price out Mex fans, some of the best in the world, and you also have to give USMNT fans something to get excited about. Nobody is shelling out their hard-earned dollars to watch this hot mess.”

Gomez also noted that the USMNT has struggled for much of the last decade or so, which has stifled excitement among fans at the 2026 FIFA World Cup nears. Additionally, organizers have largely priced out fans from attending matches.

“I live 5 miles from the next #USMNT match in September and I’m not planning on attending right now. $145 tickets is an atrocity for a friendly,” one fan wrote.

Ultimately, many American soccer fans would love to go support the USMNT in person. But the team is struggling. The players seem indifferent, and ticket prices are ridiculous. That all adds up to a home atmosphere that doesn’t feel at all as if you’re actually at home.
