The United States fell in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final in Houston to Mexico, 2-1. A number of social media users spammed the internet with the same commentary after the fact.
The “Gulf of Mexico” was trending online in the hours that followed the soccer matchup. It was a comical and unexpected response to the final result.
The two most successful participants in Gold Cup history squared up in the championship round of play. Mexico was looking for title No. 10. The US men’s national team was looking to add to its current total of seven.
Things got off to a quick start for the United States with Chris Richards scoring the match’s first goal just four minutes into the action. It would be the only time the Americans found the back of the net.
Mexico evened the score at 1-1 in the first half. They then took a lead after a controversial handball no-call flipped momentum leading to a go-ahead goal. That would push the score to 2-1, which stood throughout the remainder of play.

Clips of Mexico’s Gold Cup Final win and ensuing celebration were quickly posted to social media. A number of the images from FOX’s broadcast received the same online response.
“It’s the Gulf of Mexico,” was the top comment on a number of FOX Soccer’s TikTok posts. The same was true for X and Instagram.
President Donald Trump ordered that the body of water be renamed to the Gulf of America in US government documents after making his return to office. The change was made in accordance with the President’s executive order to “restore names that honor American Greatness.”
Mexico flashed its greatness on the pitch during the Gold Cup. Fans are claiming bragging rights at the United States’ expense.
