Member of Gen Z are reportedly taking repeated bathroom breaks throughout their day without actually needing to use the facilities, or doing anything once they’re in there. They call it “bathroom camping” or “restroom camping.”
We know this because so many of them have posted about it on TikTok recently. According to these many TikTok videos, these Gen Z peeps are just going to the bathroom and hanging out in there to refresh, reset, or just zone out.
“Restroom camping gotta be (one of the top 5) investments I made when I was 9,” one person on TikTok claimed.
“Every time something gets overstimulating in my life, where I’m at a party or something or even when I’m at home and I feel overstimulated, let me go to the bathroom and let me refresh a little,” another TikTok user revealed.
“My bathroom has always been my safe space and the first thing I check when moving to a new place for comfort,” another TikTok user commented.
“I go to the bathroom at work like 11 times a day just to stand in there,” another person admitted.

In researching the “bathroom camping” phenomenon, The Daily Dot discovered that while many Gen Zers are “bathroom camping” just to do things like read, doom scroll, or smoke, “people who are neurodivergent, or suffer from PTSD, severe anxiety, or chronic depression could shut themselves in bathrooms in order to cope with overwhelming feelings.”
One TikTok user echoed that line of thinking, writing, “The bathroom felt like the only place I could be sure I was alone. I realized how often I did it, even as an adult when I was no longer in an abusive space. I had to accept that I was finally safe and though bathroom camping was a tool used to survive… Still working on things but have made great improvements. I hope everyone finds a safe place in the world where they can heal.”
