DiJonai Carrington claims WNBA beat reporter Christine Brennan is lying about a heated confrontation regarding her girlfriend, NaLyssa Smith. She even went so far as to threaten potential legal action for defamation of character.
Although I do not know for sure, I cannot imagine that three different reporters would completely fabricate an interaction that did not happen.
This latest WNBA drama once again stems from the league’s biggest star, Caitlin Clark. The eventual Rookie of the Year got poked in the eye during a playoff game last September. Carrington was the one who poked her. Idiots on the internet immediately ran wild with the narrative that it was intentional.
Unfortunately, a large number of those people are granted a platform that is far bigger than they deserve. They claimed Carrington poked Clark in the eye on purpose because she is racist. It became a much bigger deal than it needed to be. Both players tried to move on. Things happen in basketball. Not everything needs to be blown out of proportion.
For example, this literally happened to Carrington in a game just the other day:
The minimal length of Carrington’s nails made the “on purpose” narrative look ridiculous but the 26-year-old was still forced to deal with nasty death threats. She was at the center of a controversy that only became a controversy because Clark was involved.
Brennan, a sports columnist for USA Today, decided to go directly to the source. The 66-year-old asked Carrington whether the eye poke was calculated and whether she laughed about it afterwards. The fourth-year WNBA point guard was furious with the question, even though it was just as fair as ridiculous. I see no issue with the question but I also don’t think it was necessary. I digress.
The WNBA Player’s Association issued a statement to critique Brennan for her question. It did not hold back its thoughts about the narrative she was supposedly trying to spin. They were not happy.
According to Christine Brennan, she and Carrington got into it again on the day after she asked the question. Here reads a passage from her new book, titled ‘On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports”:
At 11:30 the next morning, Wednesday, September 25, eight hours before Game Two, Carrington wasn’t on the court. She wasn’t in the locker room. She wasn’t looking at game film.
No, on the day she was named the WNBA’s Most Improved Player, Carrington was poking her head through a gap in the black curtains surrounding a catering area backstage at the arena, raising her voice at three journalists sitting at a table.

Brennan lists Indianapolis Fieldhouse Files Fever beat writer Scott Agness and Indianapolis Star Fever beat writer Chloe Peterson as the other two reporters. Carrington reportedly yelled at her in front of them.
“Why are you talking shit about NaLyssa?” she blurted out loudly, referring to her partner, NaLyssa Smith, the Fever forward […]
“You’re saying she’s a bad teammate!” Carrington yelled.
Then she looked specifically at me. “I walked past and I heard you talking shit about NaLyssa! It was you, out of your mouth!”

I find it hard to believe Brennan would completely fabricate this interaction. I find it even harder to believe she would attach the name of two additional witnesses to her story if it was not true.
And yet, DiJonai Carrington seemingly used three different emojis to call the story a “lie” and “cap.”
She also went one step further to claim Brennan is defaming her character.
If this story did not happen as this new book states, DiJonai Carrington should absolutely pursue legal action against Christine Brennan. However, I would guess that these two posts on X is the last we will here from her about this story. It would be silly to pursue a lawsuit against what I believe is truth. You can make your own conclusion based on the sequence of events laid out above!
