U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins spoke at an event this morning in Washington to announce the formation of a new, multiagency operation to protect domestic farmland and America’s food supply from foreign adversaries.

Tuberville, also flanked by several senior members of the Trump administration, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, emphasized the importance of supporting American farmers and the need to protect domestic farmland from outside threats.

“Our farmers go out every morning to scratch the ground to try to make a living and try to feed all of us in this country,” Tuberville (R-Auburn) said. “I’m on the Ag Committee and Armed Services Committee. I’ve seen it all. I’m not a politician. I’ve been on the front row and been able to watch the devastation of our farming community in the last four years under the Democrat, Socialist, Communist, Biden Party. It was devastating.”

According to Tuberville, input costs for America’s farmers have been high, leading many to go out of business.

“Instead of a $700,000 cotton picker, they’re $1.5 million. They wanted to put our farmers under. We lost 150,000 farms and 25,00 farmers in the last few years. We are in trouble in agriculture, real trouble. We just tried to help them with reference prices in the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ we just passed. But they’re going to need a lot of help because they are scratching a clawing just to make a living.”

Tuberville stressed the need to shield domestic farmland from purchase by hostile parties, including China.

“They are dominating us in almost everything they do because we’ve sat back and the politicians have been counting their money instead of doing what’s right and helping this country stay in the front,” said Tuberville. “They are coming into our country and buying our farmland. In my state of Alabama alone, they own 2.2 million acres of farmland. It’s embarrassing what we’ve done. Don’t blame the farmers. The farmers have to make a living. If they can’t, they have to sell their farmland.”

“The Biden Administration forced our farmers to sell their farmland by all the things they did to them. It’s a disgrace.”

Tuberville previously filed the Protecting America’s Agricultural Land from Foreign Harm Act in February, prohibiting people associated with the governments of China and other foreign adversaries from purchasing or leasing American farmland.

“For too long, we’ve sat by while foreign nations have been trying to take over our nation’s agricultural industry,” Tuberville said after introducing the bill. “Our adversaries are always looking for any way to get their foot in the door and jeopardize our national security — including our agricultural assets.

“There’s no reason why foreign adversaries should be allowed to buy American farmland or timberland. Not only is it dangerous for our producers, but it’s disastrous for our national security.”

A January 2024 GAO report suggests that foreign investment in U.S. agricultural land continues to increase. As of 2021, it was more than 40 million acres, with some 340,000 known to be owned by China.
