Rafael Devers Proves Red Sox Right On Attitude Concerns After Petty Trade To San Francisco

The Boston Red Sox split with slugger Rafael Devers midway through the 2025 MLB campaign over attitude concerns. The infielder has since proved his former team right to worry about his supposed selfishness.

Devers’ issues have reportedly resurfaced with the San Francisco Giants. He has no desire to help out his new team, either.

The Red Sox added Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman to the roster in the offseason, angering Rafael Devers. Despite expressing initial hesitance, he agreed to assume a role as the team’s designated hitter.

He was then asked to help out at first base following an injury to starter Tristan Casas. He refused.

“They had the conversation with me. I don’t think it’s the best decision [to move to first base] after they asked me to play a different position… To all of a sudden have me try to play another position – it doesn’t seem like a good decision.”

The two sides had recently agreed to a contract north of $300 million. Boston didn’t believe he was meeting his end of the bargain. Fed up, they dealt him to the Giants.

That trade partner was an interesting one. San Francisco, too, had a Gold Glove winner manning the hot corner. Devers would likely be unable to play his desired position in The Bay. The Red Sox admitted to not trading him to the highest bidder. It was karma.

Rafael Devers won’t learn first base with the Giants, either.

Broadcaster Will Flemming said that Devers snubbed San Francisco legend Will Clark on his second day with the team. Clark had hoped to work on fielding at first base. Devers never showed.

“They think he’s going to win them divisions and hit a bunch of home runs… They don’t yet know what is going to happen with the player,” Flemming said. “I was there on the second day. Will Clark was there to work on ground balls with him at first base. Raffy didn’t show up. That’s the person that [the Red Sox] have been dealing with for a long time.”

In the end, Rafael Devers proved Boston right to worry about his commitment to the team. He still seems unwilling to make sacrifices for the greater good.

San Francisco may be willing to deal with the issues should he prove to be an asset at the dish. Through 20 games with the Giants, he’s hitting .240 with two home runs, nine RBIs, and 28 strikeouts.
