Philadelphia Is On Day 7 Of A Sanitation Strike During A Heat Wave And Trash Mountains Are Taking Over

The AFSCME District Council 33 represents 9,000 city workers in Philadelphia and they began striking on July 1st, putting a stop to trash pickup. Seven days into the strike and the City of Brotherly Love’s trash situation has gotten out of control.

There were no negotiations on Sunday between the union and city officials in Sunday, leading to another day of trash heaps piling up throughout the city. This has led to videos from Philadelphia making it look like a third-world country when in fact it’s one of our nation’s greatest cities.

Workers are striking for ‘cost of living’ adjustment raises of 8% over 4 years. The city is pushing back, offering less. And Philadelphians are left fighting a Summer heat wave with temperatures in the 90s and streets filled with trash.

Summer Heat Isn’t Helping

The high temperature today is expected to hit 88 in Philly and 90 tomorrow. A heat wave came through over the weekend. There’s rain on the forecast for 5 of the next 6 days. All of this while endless trash heaps have taken over the streets of Philadelphia.

And just like every city in the Northeast, there are rats in Philadelphia.

Are they as famous as their New York vermin brethren? Definitely not, but they’re there. And mountains of trash on the streets bring them out in droves. As do raccoons and other trash feeders.

With each passing day, the Philadelphia trash strike situation only worsens. I’ve lived through trash strikes in NYC and can say as a citizen, being used as a political pawn by the mayor is infuriating. You pay for a service (sanitation pickup) yet the politicians have complete control.

Hopefully, this trash strike in Philadelphia will get resolved this week because it isn’t just the city center being impacted. Parts of Philadelphia out in Cheltenham, Bensalem Township, Upper Darby, and elsewhere are all suffering from the 9,000 worker strike.
