A handful of Liverpool Football Club squad members have reported to the AXA Training Center for the start of preseason just days after the death of their teammate, Portugal forward Diogo Jota. Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva in Spain at the age of 28 years old on July 3.

In addition to Liverpool players returning to the team’s facility, Tuesday also saw Spanish authorities release a preliminary report on Diogo Jota’s tragic death.

Jota and Silva were killed while driving on the A-52 motorway near the north-west city of Zamora when their Lamborghini came off the road and caught fire. The A-52 is reportedly in poor condition, as The Athletic reported last week that “investigators were working on a theory that the car had suffered a puncture to one of its rear tyres while overtaking a truck.:

“On Tuesday, Spain’s Guardia Civil — one of the country’s two national police forces — issued an update on the progress of its investigation.”

“The expert report is being carried out and finished, where among other things, the tread marks left by one of the wheels of the vehicle are being studied. Everything also points to a possible high excess of speed over the permitted speed of the road. All the tests carried out for the moment point to the fact that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota.”

Tuesday morning in England, veteran Reds players such as Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, Conor Bradley, and Wataru Endo were spotted at the training facility for preseason duty, as was new signing Jeremy Frimpong.

Salah — one of the best players in the world and one of Liverpool’s talismans alongside captain Virgil Van Dijk — was photographed looking somber and stone-faced as he pulled into the training center.

In his Instagram post memorializing his late teammate, Salah said that Jota’s death had left him “terrified” to return to Liverpool.

“I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back. My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten,” a heartbroken Salah wrote.

Liverpool were scheduled to play their first preseason friendly of the summer at Preston North End on Sunday, however, at this time, it is unclear whether that match will go forward.

LFC, the defending Premier League champions, will also be playing in the first match of the 2025/26 season when they host AFC Bournemouth on August 15.
