The Dallas Cowboys are known to have a bit of a shady past when it comes to dealing with character issues surrounding top players. On occasion, they’ve attempted to sweep things under the rug in order to preserve the playing status of their superstars.
That was never more the case than in the late 1990s following an incident involving Michael Irvin that could’ve easily turned fatal. The wide receiver stabbed a teammate in the neck!
Jeff Pearlman joined the Going Deep With Chad and JT podcast to break down some of the wildest stories from his time covering sports. He spoke on an interaction with unhinged Atlanta Braves closer John Rocker. He detailed Barry Bonds’ arrogant attitude when dealing with media.
The wildest story, however, involved Michael Irvin. It’s one that Pearlman’s reported on before but somehow gets forgotten as the years pass.
“The Cowboys had an offensive lineman named Everett McIver,” Pearlman said. “He went to get his hair cut. Michael Irvin said, ‘Seniority.’ All the offensive linemen are like ‘F— that, don’t get up…’
“They start getting in a pushing match, and Michael Irvin grabs the barber’s scissors and stabs him in the neck and drags it along. Blood is spraying everywhere. It’s a crazy scene.
“Michael Irvin at the time was on probation. If that had gotten out, he’s going to jail. The Cowboys never reported it and gave Everett McIver a nice payout.”
There is a ton to unpack. Obviously, Irvin stabbing a teammate in training camp isn’t an ideal situation. Given the potential consequences of the shanking (arrest, death), it’s a story on its own.
But the cover-up is maybe even more of a headline. The Dallas Cowboys would rather protect a star player’s playing status than report him for assault with a deadly weapon. They not only opted to keep him in the locker room with the player he attacked but celebrated him with a Hall of Fame induction 10 years later.
Unfortunately, the shadiness did little to bring success. The 1998 team lost in the wildcard round of the NFL Playoffs. The Cowboys haven’t made a Super Bowl or NFC Championship in three decades. Irvin now spends his time acting strange on the Miami Hurricanes sideline.
