According to a new report, the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) is investigating a player agent for financial misconduct. The agent in question, Yasser Mendez, was the subject of a grievance filed with the MLBPA last August.

In the grievance, The Athletic reports, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas claims Yasser Mendez solicited investments in his 4Pro International Baseball Academy in Venezuela. Rojas claims that while he was still in the minor leagues, Mendez convinced him to take out two advances against future Major League Baseball contracts, once in 2019 and again in 2022, totaling $875,000. After taking out the advances, Rojas said Mendez pushed him to invest more than $450,000 of that money in the baseball academy.

“That advice was intentionally, recklessly, or negligently wrong for Rojas,” reads the grievance, a copy of which was obtained by The Athletic.

Mendez also allegedly promised Rojas significant returns on his investment and that some of the money would be used to cover Rojas’ tax liabilities. Mendez then, according to the grievance, underpaid Rojas’ taxes in 2020 and didn’t pay them at all in 2022.

Mendez was employed by Rep 1 Baseball at the time, which was named in the grievance. Chris Koras, former COO of Rep 1 and current head of Klutch Sports Group’s baseball division, was also named in the grievance. Rep 1 Baseball was later acquired by Klutch in 2023.

Klutch Sports Group claims to have no knowledge of any alleged misconduct by Yasser Mendez that “occurred long before the individual at issue was employed by Klutch.” The agency also added that he had been terminated in 2024.

An attorney representing Klutch, Rep 1 Baseball and Koras claims Mendez “discouraged Rojas from taking any payments against his future earnings” and that “Rojas voluntarily and eagerly participated in the investments.”

New York Yankees player Oswald Peraza also reportedly took out loans against future earnings to invest in Mendez’s baseball academy while he was represented by him. Whether he too is part of the MLBPA investigation into Yasser Mendez has not been revealed.

Fernando Tatis recently filed a lawsuit, making similar claims against Big League Advance Fund and Big League Advantage, LLC for pushing “illegal loans on young, vulnerable athletes.”
