29-year-old Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is no stranger to having people question his fitness. Despite being one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history, it seems to be an annual tradition for some talking head or group of fans to bring up how he looks out of shape during the offseason.
This year it’s Kansas City sports radio and podcast host Kevin Kietzman who went off on Patrick Mahomes, calling him a “disgrace” and an “embarrassment” for being “fat” after some Fourth of July photos of the quarterback shirtless on a yacht with some friends went viral.
“Vacation photos are popping up of Patrick Mahomes, and he’s fat,” Kietzman said on his podcast. “I’m gonna say it, and I’m gonna tell you the truth, that’s why you hit the play button, he’s an embarrassment.”
Kietzman wasn’t done there. Not by a long shot.
“You’re a $500 million quarterback, you’ve made all these comments in the offseason that ‘We’re gonna do our talking on the field, we got our butts kicked in the Super Bowl, we’re coming back with a vengeance,’ he continued. “Dude, you’re fat. Your belly would be fat at my pool, hanging out with us, 60-year-olds. My skin is flabbier than yours, I get it. Stop. Stop the fast food. Do a sit-up. Do something.”
Last year, fans noticed that Patrick Mahomes appeared to have gained some weight in the offseason while attending his first practice of the season. He was also roasted for having what many called a “dad-bod” after seeing him shirtless on an episode of Inside The NFL and again when pictures of him and his family on vacation at a beach resort in Los Cabos surfaced.
Rather than be upset by it, Patrick Mahomes leaned into it, admitting in an interview with Time, “I definitely have the dad bod a little bit. I’ll also say I have a great body for a quarterback. You’ve got to have some padding in there to take the hits that we take.”
He even went so far as to endorse a “Dad Bod Collection” of t-shirts to benefit his charity 15 and the Mahomies.
So there is a pretty good chance that Kevin Kietzman’s latest complaints about Mahomes’ body will fall on deaf ears, at least on the quarterback’s part. Mahomes’ trainer Bobby Stroupe, on the other hand, fired back at Kietzman on X (Twitter), writing, “You obviously need attention. If you want to see what in shape is – go make it through a practice at Saint Jo or run hurry up offense scrambling back to back to back plays. You don’t have a clue what it takes. It’s not a look, it’s performance.”
