Gabby Thomas is one of the athletes in search of unpaid money from Grand Slam Track. She is begging for her portion of the $12 million that was promised to her by Michael Johnson’s rapidly failing enterprise.
Meanwhile, the series continues to chase notoriety through her name, image and likeness.
Grand Slam Track was founded by Johnson, a four-time Olympic gold medalist. His goal was to elevate the sport of track and field through a more concentrated format compared to the Diamond League. He promised more head-to-head races between the world’s best athletes and a lot more money. Athletes were supposedly competing for a prize pool of more than $12.5 million that may or may not exist.
The first meet in Grand Slam Track history took place in Kingston, Jamaica. It later made stops in Miami and Philadelphia. All three meets were not well attended so the series was forced to cancel the fourth and final meet of the inaugural season due to low interest and a lack of funding.
Money is a real issue for Grand Slam Track. Athletes have not been paid.
The champions have yet to receive their prize money. Some (if not all) of the biggest names have yet to receive their large participation fees. Everybody wants what they were promised.
Grand Slam Track recently issued a statement to promise payouts by the end of September. As you could imagine, the athletes are not thrilled. Especially as the league continues to post on social media as if it is not having monetary issues. It looks like business as usual.
Take this TikTok post about Gabby Thomas, for example:
Thomas loves the edit. She is not thrilled with the context. The 28-year-old American commented back to the video with a very simple request.
So dope!!! pls pay me

To make matters even worse, Gabby Thomas was forced to deal with an unruly (and creepy) heckler during the Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia. The man was later banned from future events and served a heavy dose of karma from FanDuel, but it was still unfortunate.
Thomas didn’t even get paid for her troubles! She, like every Grand Slam Track athlete, just wants the money she was promised. Is that really too much to ask? Apparently so.
