The British press is being thoroughly criticized for their coverage of Diogo Jota’s funeral over the weekend. The Liverpool and Portugal forward was killed in a car accident at the age of 28 years old on July 3.

Following the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva, the vigil for the pair was held on Friday, July 4 followed by the funeral on Saturday, July 5.

Despite the fact that Jota’s family asked for the funeral to be private — the BBC even acknowledged as much — live streams of the services in Gondomar, Portugal were still broadcast by the likes of BBC and Sky News, leading to fervor from British soccer fans.

“The BBC News coverage of Diogo Jota and André Silva’s funerals has been nothing short of embarrassing. A presenter claimed Gondomar is in Spain — it’s in Portugal. A journalist even said Jota played for Wimbledon. Disrespectful and unforgivable from a national broadcaster,” one person tweeted.

“Anyone else think that the live coverage from Portugal of Diogo Jota’s funeral by BBC News is unnecessary and in bad taste? We don’t need live updates of “developments”. Leave his family alone,” another added.

“The BBC and other organizations should be held to account after their disgraceful coverage of Diogo Jota’s passing and funeral,” a third claimed.

The final goal of Jota’s life came in April when one of his trademark perfectly-placed shots delivered a 1-0 win over intercity rivals Everton Football Club in the Merseyside Derby en route to LFC winning its 20th league title. 20 was also the jersey number that Jota wore for the club.

Our thoughts are with Jota and Silva’s family, friends and fans during this difficult time. May they rest in peace.
