Danne Howard named President, CEO of Alabama Hospital Association following Dr. Williamson retirement

The Alabama Hospital Association (AlaHA) has announced a major leadership transition with the retirement of Chief Executive Officer Dr. Don Williamson. The AlaHA Board of Trustees has named Danne Howard as his successor as President and CEO of the organization.

Williamson has led AlaHA since November 2015, steering the organization through a period of major challenges.

The Association highlighted his steady leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing his guidance as both steady and decisive. In the years following the pandemic, amid increasing financial pressures and structural changes in healthcare, he continued to advocate for accessible, high-quality care—especially for underserved populations.

“Don has been a trusted leader and a tireless advocate for better health in Alabama,” said Vernon Johnson, Chair of the AlaHA Board of Trustees and CEO of Dale Medical Center.

“His steady hand during the pandemic, his commitment to access to care, and his lifetime of service have left a lasting mark on our healthcare system. We are deeply grateful for his dedication and proud to honor his extraordinary contributions.”

Danne Howard assumes the role with nearly three decades of experience at AlaHA, most recently serving as Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer.

The Association noted that Howard has played a key role in shaping policy, leading advocacy efforts, managing operations, and coordinating emergency preparedness initiatives. She has consistently represented Alabama hospitals at both the state and national levels.

A native of central Alabama, Howard’s institutional knowledge, established relationships, and operational expertise uniquely position her to lead the Association through its next chapter.

“Danne is a highly respected voice in healthcare with a long-standing track record of success,” said AlaHA Board Chair Vernon Johnson.

“Her leadership is guided by a clear sense of purpose and a deep dedication to the health and well-being of Alabamians. Danne brings the experience, insight, and vision necessary to lead the Association forward in this new chapter.”
